Why The Revised Edition?
In this second section of the Preface, McDowell offers that the first edition of Evidence That Demands a Verdict was published in 1972. I was 6 years old then. He shares that it was revised in 1979 and that significant new discoveries have taken place since then to further support the historical credibility of the Christian faith. The new material helps to counter new philosophical ideas that sweep over the earth (McDowell notes the Jesus Seminar as one) which often mislead people away from authentic Christianity. He hopes in this third edition that the book may further equip Christians for the 21st Century. Gene. Sunday, May 23, 2004
The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict: Forward
As we begin the Forward of Josh McDowell's book, we read: "No, this is not a book." He further explains that it is a "compilation of notes" from his lecture series, "Christianity: Hoax or History." Josh had been giving this lecture at colleges and universities and found that students impressed by his lecture had no means by which to reuse his material in their own study and presentation of Christ to others. So, Josh put together Evidence That Demands A Verdict, Volume 1 and later Volume 2 . These two books are designed to counter university cultural assumptions that Christianity is somehow flawed, intellectually. The one combined volume edition we have before us is a further update of these two previous volumes which "brings the debate up to date," Josh asserts. Sunday, May 16, 2004
As we examine the last few paragraphs of the Forward by Bill Bright, we see his opinion that most people do not need intellectual proof of the deity of Jesus Christ. This may be true, but my experiences are that we need to be prepared to share the reasons we believe in his deity, just the same.
Bill proposes that the Christian will benefit most from the book. Then he quotes John 20:27-29 to end his letter of support for the book. Signed by: William R. Bright President and Founder Campus Crusade for Christ International Arrowhead Springs San Bernadino, CA 92414 (Now Deceased) Gene. Monday, March 08, 2004
In the last paragraph on the left side of page xii, Bill tells of men who have come to Christ through the intellectual arguments for Christ like C. S. Lewis and Malcolm Muggeridge. This is after the acknowledgment that renown atheists like Aldous Huxley and Bertrand Russell have never walked past the intellectual arguments for Christ's birth, resurrection, miracles, etc.
In the end, God has to draw people to Him (see: John 6:44). Man can plant the seed, but God makes the seed grow within the heart of the hearer (see: I Corinthians 3:7).
He further explains that of those he has convinced of the deity of Christ, very few actually come forward to a accept Christ as savior, as they do not desire to believe.
You see, many people enjoy a lifestyle, according to Scripture, that excludes God intentionally. "[M]en loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil" (John 3:19), is the way Jesus put it. They refuse to acknowledge Jesus as more than a man in the face of evidence to the contrary because they enjoy a life in the shadowy world of sin, so says the Scripture.
Bill tells in the next paragraph that he has met few in his 55 years of work with the academic community whom he feels honestly examine the evidences of Jesus and walk away unconvinced of his deity and roll as savior to those who believe on the name, Jesus.
As we begin the second page of William "Bill" Bright's Forward to the book, we see the gist of the first paragraph summed up in the sentence that reads, "Leadership Training Institutes, Lay Institutes for Evangelism, Institutes of Biblical Studies, and other training programs have prepared hundreds of thousands to give valid, convincing, historical, and documented reasons for their faith in Jesus Christ." These are those from Campus Crusade for Christ, he shares.

In the last full paragraph of the first page of Mr. Bright's Forward, he shares a Biblical quote: "Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to every one who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you" (I Peter 3:15).
We Christians must always be getting prepared for the question and answer time in any of our realtionships, you see. It is the command of Holy Scripture. One of the reasons the world is in the mess it is is because too many of us Christians remain unprepared to give an answer when the moment comes. I hope this blog site will provide a quick answer to the whole world in time. Enough for today, Pastor Gene Chapman.
Down a bit on the same page, Mr. Bright shares that Josh McDowell has been a travelling representative of Campus Crusade for Christ International since 1964. Josh has spoken to over 7 million students and professors in that time, in 84 countries and on some 700 campuses.
Josh holds a magna cum laude degree from Talbot Theological Seminary, relates Mr. Bright.
In Bill Bright's first page of a two page Forward, he writes, "Is Christianity credible?" He continues, "Is there an intellectual basis for faith in Jesus Christ as The Son of God?"
Well, apologetics is the center of these two questions listed. As your teacher, my job here is the greatest task of my life. My job is to present Jesus Christ as the center of all of human experience and history by intellectual means.
When I was in Bible College in South Carolina, I used to get these students from Clemson University who hated Jesus Christ. They would try to tie me up with foolish questions like, "Can God make a rock too big for him to move?" You know the type. I wish I'd known a Josh McDowell in those days, but I'm glad that Bill Bright was putting men like Josh McDowell on University campuses.
Today, I'm a better preacher because of such men of Christ.
As we begin what will most assuredly be a very long study of the book entitled, New Evidence That Demands A Verdict, by Josh McDowell, I want encourage all of you to go out and get yourself a copy of this great builder of the Christian faith.
As we open up the book, we see a Forward section marked by William (Bill) R. Bright, President and Founder of Campus Crusade For Christ International (see: p. xii). Mr. Bright recently passed away, as a very respected Christian leader. I think he died of cancer, if I recall rightly. Tuesday, February 24, 2004
I'll be teaching the book entitled, The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict, by Josh McDowell over the next few years, as I am able. Go to bibleapologetics.blogspot.com and buy a copy of the book at any book store to follow along. Teaching on the Credability of Jesus Christ is the central mission of any God called minister, as I am. Gene Chapman.

Such is as Anti-Christian a concept as any in human history and must of necessity be opposed by every free born and free now Christian upon all the face of the earth, even unto death. Those who resist a labor tax unto death show the Lordship of Jesus Christ and purchase for themselves both the crown of righteousness and the martyr's crown. 'Be not ye the [slaves] of men'" (I Corinthians 7:23). -- Gene Chapman. "Enslaver" (I Timothy 1:10): (Greek word: andrapodistes) One who imposes a labor tax (ie. income tax) upon a free person; thus, under the judgment of the Moral Law of God. "Slave" (I Corinthians 7:23): (Greek word: dulos) One whose labor and/ or benefit thereof is claimed by another. The payment of a tax on labor (ie. income tax) by a freeborn Christian is an immoral act. "Be not ye the [slaves] of men" (I Corinthians 7:23).
